Services to the farmers and their association
Cambodian farmers' major concern is the lack of profitable market where to sell their product. Traditionally, products are bought at the farm by Khmer or Vietnamese traders and sold on local markets. These products are in direct competition with Vietnamese or Thai products that dictate the market price. Due to the lack of infrastructures and because Cambodian farmers usually own small-scale farms, production costs in Cambodia are often higher than in neighbouring countries. Therefore it is difficult for Cambodian farmers to compete with foreign imports.
Cambodian farmers contract FarmLink to diversify their market and develop access to more profitable sources of income.
The core service that FarmLink offers these farmers is marketing and promotion for their products.
Often however, the industry must be reorganized in order to complete or strengthen
the commodity chain from the farmers to the end user and maximise farmers' profits.
Consolidate the farmers organization
Each individual farmer produces small quantities of product, using its own production techniques.
Markets need reliable partners that can guarantee the quantity, the quality and the homogeneity of the supply.
Grouping farmers in associations is a way to achieve this goal. Farmers' associations also allow them to share their resources and expertise, thereby increasing their collective financial power and knowledge.
Maximize the productivity
Market price is not the only factor that determines farmers' incomes. Often, farms productivity is very low due to the lack of infrastructures and to farming techniques that could be improved.
Finding financial partners for the farmers' associations, introducing new farming techniques, providing machineries are part of FarmLink's strategy to maximize farms' productivity.
Consolidate the supply chain
Traditional traders, collectors, retailers are sometimes not able to ensure the distribution of the product on the target market, especially on export markets.
When necessary, FarmLink Distribution division completes the chain by taking the role of the missing link.
Market the product
First FarmLink identifies the profitable markets on which the products could be sold. Then, while setting up the supply chain, FarmLink conducts several activities in order to promote the product on these markets.
These activities consist of developing campaigns in Cambodia or abroad to raise consumer and distributor awareness on the product. We develop promotion tools (brochures, websites...), participate in international events (international fares, seminars...), implement media coverage (newspapers and magazine articles, TV shows).
We finally identify and contact the major market actors to organize the distribution of the product.
Cost free services
In the Cambodian context, farmers generally do not have the finances to afford the services of a company. We believe however in the potential for fair and stable income for these farmers.
FarmLink provides its services to the farmers on a cost-free basis until their financial situation is healthy and stable.
